Frequently Asked Questions
Most plant sites try to identify plants by posting an image. Then users suggest the names that come to mind.
The problems are:
- There is no way of aggregating everyone’s guess.
- There is no memory of what plants were posted.
- So the group never learns.
- Moreover, plants tend to grow near other plants that are similar.

How does it work?
Oftentimes you can find your plant just by searching for it using our unique visual plant characteristics. You tell us a few things about your plant and we search our database of previously identified plants and suggest possible matches – based on leaf shape, flower color, etc. You might also see similar plants growing nearby. In the beginning, our database will likely have a limited selection, as it will rely on your postings to learn.
If a search for a plant using visual clues doesn’t find it, your plant is probably a new addition. Post photos of your plant(s) and add them to the map, along with helpful identifying information.
Registered users help identify the plant by suggesting possible names and voting on them. Working together, the group is easily able to identify most plants. Once you confirm, the plant is considered identified and will be recorded in our database for future users.
How many pictures can I upload?
You can upload up to three photos for each plant you submit. If different photos are requested, you can change the photos associated with your plant at any time.
What type of photos should I include?
When uploading pictures of your plant, you should try to include photos of helpful identifiers, such as leaves, flowers, fruits, bark, and anything else that you think would be helpful for identification purposes. To ensure your photos look their best, please follow these helpful hints: (1) try not to use your flash; (2) make sure there is adequate light and watch out for shadows; (3) use your camera’s macro or “flower” setting for close-ups; and (4) center and focus your subject.
